LRAFB SFPC Safeguarding Classified Information in the NISP Practice Test

Overwriting electronic media is a sanitization step. It erases stored data by overwriting it with new data, making recovery of the original information unlikely. The key point is that this process does not change the media’s classification status—declassification is a separate decision handled through official procedures. Because the data has been sanitized but the media itself remains within its original security context, it can be reused, but only within the same environment that matches its original classification and handling requirements. That’s why the statement that best fits policy is that overwriting does not declassify the media, and the media may be reused only within the same environment. The other ideas blur the distinction between sanitization, declassification, and reuse constraints or imply the media is unusable, which isn’t how overwriting is defined.
